Top 9 Best TV Dads (2008)

By Rachel Thomas, About.com

For many years, television has had a profound effect on people. Experts say that television destroys our creativity and can diminish brain productivity. If that is indeed true, thank goodness we have nine terrific fathers to look up to each week!

1. Tripp Darling ('Dirty Sexy Money')

His children may be spoiled rotten, but he loves them fiercely. When Tripp learned that Brian was fathered by another man, rather than cast him aside, he made it clear that his feelings will never change. Not many men would take the high road in a case like this!

2. Horatio Caine ('CSI: Miami')

It came as a shock to Horatio when he learned he was a father of a teenager, but imagine his surprise when he also learned his son was a criminal. Horatio embraced his new role and put everything on the line (including his job) to protect his son -- including making a deal with an inmate to keep Kyle safe during his incarceration.

3. Walter White ('Breaking Bad')

When Walt learned that he was terminally ill with lung cancer, he set out to ensure that his family would be financially secure once he was gone -- alright, so he decided to use his scientific knowledge to create a Meth lab, but his wife is pregnant, his teenage son has cerebral palsy and he's a science teacher.... his heart is in the right place. It's television folks!

4. Noah "H.R.G." Bennet ('Heroes')

For much of season one, we weren't sure whether H.R.G. was good or evil. As the season progressed, not only did we learn he was a good guy, he would stop at nothing to protect his family - even if he has to sacrifice his own life. In an effort to keep them safe, Noah swept them away to another state, changed their names and tried to live a normal life. While it may not have worked out too well, at least now he knows that Claire's blood could save the world.

5. Bill Henrickson ('Big Love')

Three wives, two stores, seven children and one on the way makes for a very busy polygamist. No matter how busy Bill is much of the time, he always makes time for his wives and children. Of course, he gets a little help from very careful scheduling and a little blue pill.

6. Joe Dubois ('Medium')

It's not easy being the man behind the psychic, but Joe Dubois is every wife's dream husband. He cooks, he cleans, he drives the kids to school, helps with homework and he's an actual rocket scientist! Joe and Allison are perfect examples of realistic parents trying to make ends meet and raise three kids -- with the exception of the tremendous gift Allison possesses.

7. Tom Scavo ('Desperate Housewives')

He's got three demon boys, a borderline sinister child he never knew he had and a wife who almost cheated on him -- Tom Scavo's life certainly isn't as wonderful as Mike Brady's, but he isn't running for the hills either. Tom is the perfect example of a real father with real problems that don't get solved in one hour each week.

8. Stephen Trager ('Kyle XY')

Raising two teenagers is rough all on its own, but taking in what many believed to be an alien (we know better now) is above and beyond the call of duty. Stephen and the rest of the Trager family took Kyle into their home and hearts and never regretted it for a second - even when things became extremely dangerous.

9. Ignacio Suarez ('Ugly Betty')

© American Broadcasting Companies, Inc./Eric Liebowitz
He came into this country illegally just to give his daughters a better life. He encourages his girls in all they do and isn't afraid to tell them when they are making foolish mistakes. He prepares burrito nights every week -- how could we not include this remarkable man on this list?!
